R OPEN PRACTICE SESSIONS

An invitation to come together and practise autonomously alongside each other using space as an open studio. Open Practice Sessions are central to Rhyzome Choreographic School, as here we explore and negotiate what it means to cultivate an environment of working alongside each other and in extension with the world we inhabit!

We provide ideas as starting points, as well as drawing and writing materials. Typically, sessions are held for 2 hours and is followed by a shared discussion with all the participants.

These sessions are anchored to the body and presence, so we ask that you keep the space free of laptops and phones.

2026 @ MUNICIPAL GARDENS, LEMESOS

WITH RIA ALEXANDROU

EMBODIED GARDENS

Embodied Gardens is a site-responsive project initiated by Rhyzome Choreographic School, inviting artist Ria Alexandrou to engage with the Municipal Garden as a civic and choreographic space, a site that can nurture shared presence and cultivate embodied ways of being in the city. Working on site with the garden’s existing elements, ephemeral gestures unfold over time, inviting audiences and passersby to collectively explore new constellations and materialities. The project proposes a form of embodied participation to be experienced in one’s own time, engaging with the garden as a space to inhabit and listen to, shifting our attention away from the anthropocentric to include all life forms, transient compositions, and communities.

The project approaches choreography in an expanded sense, attending to the constant movement of all life around us, both visible and invisible, while allowing our imaginations to unfold formations, traces, and arrangements that may become a collective and meditative action of togetherness within the garden.

For the three days of the summer festival and beyond, RCS wants to cultivate an embodied way of being in the garden, the city and in extension to the world.

“The world we inhabit is not, in this sense, a determinable set of objective processes. It is our larger flesh, a densely intertwined and improvisational tissue of experience. By inhabiting our bodily experience all the more richly and wakefully, feeling our way into deeper contact with other experiencing bodies, and hence with the wild, incorporeal life of earth itself.”

WHAT IS BEHIND THAT CURTAIN?

UNWRITTEN SCORES FOR A PARTY

Elena Savvidou is a performance artist working with sound and a musician working through performance. Over the past few years, she has been improvising in diverse spaces, using a variety of materials to create feeling-specific performances that offer self-contained sonic experiences. Her work is deeply influenced by the environments in which she performs. She is particularly interested in how movement and sound act as transitions between moments, shaping new, temporary environments. An important aspect of her practice unfolds on the dancefloor, where people’s gestures and unspoken dynamics become her medium.

In recent years, through organising parties together with a collective of people, she has explored the dancefloor as a space for movement experimentation and shared listening, intentionally shaping these gatherings to feel as casual and intimate as a living room. Through this research, she coined the term vibe creator, proposing that within the structure of the dancefloor, interactions between people and the DJ give rise to shared memories, unwritten choreographies, and fluid social roles.

Choreography emerges in parties through unwritten scores - social cues, spatial relations, and shared rhythms that guide bodies while leaving room for improvisation. Existing within a defined temporality and often unfolding in unconventional timeframes, the party can be understood as a happening: a continuous becoming in which moving, resting, and relating emerge as a forever changing compositional act.
